Christine Marie Ray

Christine Marie Ray (Wilson) was born the first of thirteen children to Willie and Rachel Wilson on July 26, 1933 in Buckhorn, TX. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, John Harris (Poppa) & Winnie Harris (Momma), whom she adored. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost at Samuel Chapel in Buckhorn, Texas.
Christine was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Ernest Ray, Sr. on July 18, 1953. To this union, they were blessed with six children.
Christine had such a loving and compassionate spirit for those in need which led her to employment with St. Joseph Hospital for over twenty years. She devoted herself to ensuring that every mother and child was well taken care of on that fourth floor maternity ward. Even in retirement, Christine still took advantage of the opportunity to visit the sick and shut-in.
Christine planted seeds in several ministries throughout the course of her years. Her affiliation included: Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church (Pastor Dawson), Yale Street Baptist Church (Pastor H. L. Galloway), Hope Faith and Charity Missionary Baptist Church (Pastor H. L. Galloway), Christ Missionary Baptist Church (Pastor J. Williams), Victorious Living Church (Pastor R. Ray) and S.T.R.O.N.G. Life Ministries (Pastor T. Ray) where she served faithfully until her death.
Christine was the master chef of the greatest SWEET cornbread dressing ever. You missed a treat if you never tasted it. Christine also had a great love of the outdoors. She could be seen by her neighbors working and tending to her garden.
Christine was called home on Wednesday, March 16, 2011. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents-John and Winnie Harris; parents-Willie and Rachel Wilson; her husband-Ernest Ray, Sr.,; siblings-Leola, Mae Emma, Edgar, Inez, Curtis, and Katherine; and her grandson-Martin.
Christine leaves to cherish her memory her children-Jo Ann (Donald), Ernest, Jr. (Rosalinda), Richard (Patsy), Margret (James), Thomas (Regina) and LaShawn (Christopher); siblings-John (Barbara), Johnnie Mae, Willie Mae (Joe), and Eugene (Debbie); grandchildren-Yamasheta, Crystal (Roderick), Rachel (Cheven), Richard, Jr., Alex, Philemon (Rachel), Erica, Ricky, Marcus, Donald, Jr., Tamela (Solomon), Khristan, Eva, Tacarrington, Theophilus, Ernest III, Demetria, Cedric, Solace, Shawn Kris, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Manuel Ray Rusher

I have finished my work. I now take my rest. Don’t weep for me, the Lord knows best. If anyone should ask for my whereabouts, tell them I am resting in My Father’s House. Manuel Ray Rusher-Date of Death: March 8, 2011 On April 14, 1967 in Houston, Texas, Harvey and Earnestine Rusher welcomed Manuel Ray Rusher into the world. In the Rusher’s home surrounded by the love of his parents and siblings is where Manuel developed his kind and loving nature.
While growing up, Manuel received his education from W.E. Rogers Elementary School, Northwood Middle School and Forest Brook Senior High School.
Manuel joined Kashmere Garden Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined Apostolic Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Bro. Lester Roch where he was baptized. At the time of his passing, Manuel was a member of St. John Methodist Church.
Manuel lived his life with an excitement and hunger for the work of the ministry for the edifying the people of God. His love for God was real; his passion for the people of God was sure and the compassion he showed toward his fellow man was not measurable.
Manuel’s departure is not just a lost to his family but also to his friends and to his community. He departed this life on Tuesday, March 08, 2011. Even though he has departed this life, the impact he had on this community will not soon be forgotten.
He leaves to cherish his memory his parents-Harvey and Earnestine Rusher; 3 sisters-Patricia Rusher (Paul), Marilyn Bacon (Ellester) and Rita Hubbard (Carlton); 6 brothers-Harry Rusher (Patricia), Curtis Rusher (Gladys), Gary Rusher, Michael Rusher (Trina), Cleotis Spearman (Cheryl) and Thomas Charles Morgan; 6 aunts-Johnnie B. Annie Smith

Mrs. Annie Bell Smith was born in Oakwood, Texas on May 16, 1916 to her loving parents, the late Bob and Everene Perry. She was the second oldest child of a family of four, 3 girls and 1 boy. Ms. Annie’s family later moved to Marquez, Texas where she met Willie L. Smith. Annie Bell and Willie Smith were married on October 15, 1935 and shared 55 years of marital bliss until his death in 1990. To this union, 13 children were born, 10 girls and 3 boys.
Ms. Annie Bell loved the Lord and she was a faithful member of Faith Temple COGIC for over 40 years. She was a dedicated member of Faith Temple and the Mother of the church. She worked in Houston at Temple Oaks Baptist School for 30 years until her retirement. “Big Mama” lived, loved and laughed with her family throughout her lifetime.
She is preceded in death by her husband-Willie L. Smith; 3 daughters-Elizabeth Smith, Nancy Synegal and Bobbie L. Rivers and 6 grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her legacy of love 7 daughters-Cathryn Cornish (Chris), Millie Larson, Lillian Williams, Lillie Johnson (John), Rosie L. Payton and Janice Wolford all of Houston, Texas and Irene Latson of San Diego, California; 3 sons-Willie Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Bennie Smith and Jerry Smith of Houston, Texas; 51 grandchildren; 91 great grandchildren; 32 great great grandchildren and 2 great great great grandchildren; 1 sister-Louvenia Burton of Breckenridge, Texas; 1 niece-Alice Ann Island and 1 nephew-Eddie Island both of Corsicana, Texas and a host of other relatives and friends.

Leola Penrice

There’s an open gate at the end of the road, through which each must go alone; and there is a light we cannot see our father claims his own. Beyond the gate or loved one finds happiness and rest; and there is comfort in the thought, that a loving God knows best.
Leola Penrice was born on February 22, 1922 in Hempstead, Texas to Fred and Lucy Smith. She attended Hempstead public schools and later moved to Houston. Leola confessed Christ at an early age. She attended Yale Street Baptist Church and was an active member until her health failed her.
Leola was joined in Holy Matrimony to Obrem Penrice. Leola had eight children: Willie, OB Jr., Walter, Oka Mae, Ora, Carlyon, Bennie and Annie Mae. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband-Obrem Penrice, Sr.,; sister-Pearline; brother-Willie; son-Obrem, Jr.; daughter-Oka Mae; and son-in-law, Charles Dorsey, Sr. On March 3, 2011, Leola Penrice was called home.
Leola leaves to cherish her memory her children-Willie, Walter (Leandra), Ora, Carlyon, Bennie (Gwen), Annie Mae: James (Brenda), Gladys, Henrietta and daughter-in-law, Rosalyn; 34 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 sister-in-laws; 2 brother-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

On December 31, 1958, Bobbie Jene Theus-Mbadiwe was born to the late Arthur (Bobby) Theus and the late Dorothy Jene Theus in Ringgold, Louisiana.
Bobbie Jene attended school within the Houston Independent School District. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1977.
Bobbie Jene was raised to love and honor God and at an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and united with Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
In December 1984, she married Boniface Chukas Mbadiwe and had (5) children-Johnnisa, LaTroya, Shari, Jazzmon and Garrick.
She departed this earthly life on February 09, 2011 in Houston, Texas. Bobby Jene is preceded in death by her father and mother.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories four loving daughters-Johnnisa, LaTroya, Shari and Jazzmon; one wonderful son-Garrick; two granddaughters-Arnecia and LaZaurea; four aunts-Betty (Theodis) Robinson, Hazel and Gloria of Riggold, Louisiana and Angie of Silbey, Louisiana; one uncle-Edward Hadnot of Riggold, Louisiana; three goddaughters-Tameka Rodger, Dominique Mays and Tinisha Johnson and a host of cousins, friends and family in Christ.

Cornell Mathis, Jr.

Cornell Mathis, Jr. began his earthly journey on May 25, 1955. In Avardo, Texas, he was born to loving and proud parents Cornell and Annie Mathis. The family later moved to Houston, Texas in 1962 where he was raised with a lot of love and tender care. He was affectionately known to his family and close friends as "Jr." and "Con".
Cornell was educated in the public schools in Houston, Texas where he attended 8th Ave. Elementary, Reynolds Elementary, Carter G. Woodson Junior High and graduated from Evan E. Worthing Senior High School. He later continued his education at Texas Southern University.
He confessed his life to Christ at an early age. He attended Mt. Siani Church in 1962, Christian Hope Church in 1966 and later he was re-baptized in 2001 at Second Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Pastor Thomas Cooper.
He met and married Donnie Simple. Cornell was employed by Tubescope, John Coleman Contractor as a foreman for many years. Cornell also worked with his father in a family owned business known as Mathis & Sons Tractor Service. Cornell passed away peacefully on the evening of January 31, 2011. He was preceded in death by his father-Cornell Mathis, Sr.; both maternal and paternal grandparents; God Brother-Brian Steverson; two uncles-John Henry and David Carr who were raised with him as brothers; and sister-in-law-Rosa Mary Mathis.
Left to celebrate his life and forever hold his memories is his mother-Annie Louise Mathis (Granny); two brothers-Harvey Mathis, Jr. and Jerry Mathis, Sr. (Vivian); two daughters-Nikita Brigance (Dovan) and Deenna Simple; three grandchildren-Darion, Kamron and Sydney Brigance; one uncle-James Harvey Holloway of Fort Worth, Texas; two aunts-Eunice Mathis and Frankie Mathis of Fort Worth, Texas and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Darwin graduated with honors from Kashmere Senior High School in Houston, Texas in 1980. He obtained his first of many black belts of Martial Arts in the area of Taekwondo in 1983. Darwin was also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Mr. Darwin received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Texas Southern University.
Darwin was preceded in death by his father-Henry Lee Scott and mother-Burnadette Guillory Scott.
He leaves to cherish his memories two brothers-Duryea Scott (Gaynell) and Daron Scott (Ivonne); aunts-Faye Gregory, Burnadean Guillory, Burnell Phillips and Patricia Jackson (John); uncle-Ronald Guillory, Sr. (Peggie); three nieces-Taila Scott, Asia Scott and Duryea Danee Scott; great nephew-John Abbott, III; Godmother-Geneva Lynn Douglas; two Godsons-Ronald Guillory, Jr. and Mark Guillory and a host of cousins and friends.

Gloria Jean Moffett-Shields

Gloria Jean Moffett was born August 18, 1958 to Ida Mae Peterson and Johnny Parker in Tuskegee, Alabama. She attended school in Alabama. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Montgomery, Alabama at Bellfort Baptist Chruch.
She moved to Houston with her daughter Shawndreca Moffett and son, Ernest Moffett in 1981. As life went on, she married Clover Shields, Jr. on July 31, 1993. Through this union she became the proud mother to Marcus and Marlin Shields.
She earned a living as a R.M.A. (registered medical assistant) before retiring from that field. She devoted the rest of her life to God, family and friends. She received all of her accolades being the best wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was THERE all the time.
She is survived by: her mother, Ida Mae Peterson-Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; father, Johnny Parker- Brooklyn, New York; her husband, Clover Shields, Jr.- Houston, Texas; mother-in-law, Rosia Shields; one daughter, Shawndreca Ester (Alphonse)-Houston, Texas; three sons, Ernest Moffett (La'Tharyn)- Houston, Texas, Marlin Shields-Austin, Texas, and Marcus Shields-Houston, Texas; Eleven grandchildren: Alexis Moffett, Quanisha Jackson, Ahkeill Irving, Aaleeyah Moffett, Aleeshia Moffett, Travonne Irving, Diondre Moffett, Damarion Moffett, Laylah Moffett all of Houston, Texas and Dion and Kaitlyn Shields of Austin, Texas.
Honorary grandchildren: Germaine Cornett, Christopher Cornett, C.J. Spear, Shorone Irving, Dudley Whittaker, and Isaiah Whittaker; Two brothers, Robert Lee Moffett (Doris) of Montgomery, Alabama and Adam Ghee of Brooklyn, New York; One Sister, Debra Sledge; Four brothers-in law: Robert Shields (Sharon), Michael Shields (Laura), Timothy Shields (Kenya) all of Houston, Texas; Cornelius Shields (Gloria) of Montgomery, Texas; Two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Shields and Shirley R. Joseph H. (George) Bowens was born on February 17, 1924 to the union of Mary Petre and George Bowens in Welsh, Louisiana. He was baptized on July 20, 1924 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church also in Welsh, Louisiana.
Joseph met and married Anna Mae Melancon on January 29, 1944 in Crowley, Louisiana. To this union two daughters were born, Cheryl Denise Marie and Debbie Marie. He touched the lives of many people with his infectious smile and generosity. On January 14, 2011, Joseph Henry (George) Bowens went home to enjoy everlasting life with his Lord and Savior. He is preceded in death by his parents-Mary and George Bowens and two sisters-Lilly Mae Schaffer and Lucille Bias.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife of sixty-six years-Anna Mae Bowens; two daughters-Cheryl Payne and Debbie Bowens (James Davis) of Houston, Texas; one grandson-Martin Bowens and one granddaughter-Erica Fulton both of Houston, Texas; one sister-Mable Allen of Crowley, Louisiana; one sister-in-law-Della Rose Simon (Moses) of Houston, Texas; one brother-in-law-Antoine Melancon of Castro Valley, California and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mrs. Eddie Lee Hall was born on October 3, 1936 in DeWalt, Texas to the late Charles Tanner and Mary Jane Tanner. She attended school in the Houston Independent School District.
Eddie Lee Hall married Walter Hall who preceded her in death. The siblings that preceded her in death are-Love Jane Tanner, Charlie Mae Gibson, Catherine Smith, Vernon Williams, Melvin Tanner and one granddaughter. Eddie Lee Hall leaves to cherish her memory three daughters-Letha Frederick, Tesser Hall (Marcus) and Mary Ann Tanner; three sons-Vernon Tanner, Calvin Hall (Linda) and Johnny Hall; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; one sister-Birdie Mae Tanner; two brothers-Frankie Lee Tanner and Calvin Tanner; two brothers-in-laws-Floyd Hall and Sie Hall, Jr.; three sisters-in-laws-Bernice Taplin, Lucille Campbell, Delia Hall and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Ronnie Parks was born in Houston, Texas on May 15, 1959 to Mr. and Mrs. Louis V. Parks, Sr. He attended Burrus Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School. He confessed in Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Thomas at Bright Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.
In May 1986, Ronnie married Jerry Calvin and to this union one son was born. Later, he met Rose Bradley and remained until his death. On January 5, 2011, Ronnie entered into eternal rest.
He is preceded in death by his father-Louis V. Parks, Sr.; his mother-Margaret Ethel Parks and brother-Billy Charles Parks, Sr.

Bernice Montgomery was called home on Sunday, January 2, 2011. Bernice Montgomery was born in Plain Dealing, Louisiana on May 27, 1934 to the parents of Namon and Mamie Blake. She began her walk with Christ at the age of 14 following her baptism at Friendship Baptist Church. Bernice served as a dedicated and faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church since the 1980's.
Bernice Montgomery was preceded in death by 2 children-Eddie Lee Montgomery and Patricia Blake; 1 sister-Viola Howard and 1 brother-Jimmy Lee Blake.
